Schoolcraft County was created on March 9, 1843, from Chippewa and Mackinac counties, and organized on March 23, 1871, with the seat established at Onota. By 1882 this was changed to Manistique. It's present limits were defined in 1885. It is named for Henry R. Schoolcraft, the noted authority on Indian matters, who formulated and originated the names of many of the counties in the State. The county seat is now at Manistique (ZIP Code 49854).
